From Earth to the Universe: Picture of the day

GLOBULAR CLUSTER IN PAVO

This brilliant globular cluster is deep in the southern sky within in the constellation of Pavo (the peacock). At a distance of about 14 000 light-years, it is a little brighter than the much better known northern globular cluster M13. The colours of the stars are subtle but this image clearly shows the cool but bright red giant stars whose light dominates the cluster.
